° As a kid, Pauline lived out in the rural stretches of Atlas, in a well-forested part of the tundra. Never the most wealthy, the Leroux family made do with what they had. Her father worked for a logging company, as the head of family had for generations, until Pauline was about 9. Living mostly off that money, the rest of the necessities were homemade or foraged; Pauline grew up eating a lot of fresh-hunted game animals and various foraged things, like pine buds or homemade syrup. Shortly after her 9th birthday, the logging company closed, and in its place a dust mine opened. In order to make ends meet, her father went to work at the new mines. In the autumn when Pauline was 11, her father met his end in a cave-in.°

° After her father died, her mother sent her to the local combat school, hoping to help her reach a more sustainable life. After completing primary combat schooling at Alsius, she moved on to the comabat school at Beacon, both from her mother's savings and from scholarships.°
