Betta Halloween Short Story

》Daedric’s Halloween Surprise《

It‘s finally my favorite month, October; full of treats, costumes, and an occasional scare. Each year, I prepare for this spooky month by decorating my tank with fall leaves here and there. While I’m not decorating, I’m often peeking out my tank to stare at the big rectangle that displays moving Halloween pictures. I don’t know what this thing is, but my owner calls it a “tv”, whatever that means. Anyway, this year I decided to do something special!

My owner is away today, so I thought it would be neat to do something big to surprise her when she gets back. Though it’s hard to go big when you’re a tiny fish with no hands, I’m still determined to do something extra. I knew exactly what I needed to do. This year, I’m going to carve a pumpkin! You’d think that carving it would be an impossible task as a betta fish, but the hardest part about this was actually finding a tiny pumpkin. They don’t grow in my tank, but I still found a way to get one. It’s a long story, so don’t ask...

So I have my pumpkin, now how am I going to carve it? My fins are too delicate to cut. Maybe I can flare at it and it’ll peel out of fear? Okay yeah I it it, that was a ridiculous thought. Don’t laugh, but I tried that method for about 30 minutes. The darn pumpkin bested me.

What about my teeth? I can tear up any food easily with them. This seemed like the obvious choice since my fins can’t cut and flaring didn’t do the trick, so I bit the pumpkin as hard as I could. This wasn’t a great idea either. I latched onto the pumpkin, but I opened up too wide... I’m stuck! My jaw hurts, but I‘m more concerned about being hooked to the pumpkin’s thick skin. If I can’t escape, I’ll suffocate!

I trashed and trashed, but I couldn’t get loose. I was too tired, too sore... I give up. All I can do is lay here now. Things began to get darker and darker until I could only see pitch black. Is this it? Am I gone?

Suddenly, I felt my body lift up and I could no longer breathe. I was sure that I was a goner. Soon after, I felt my body sink and instantly, I could breathe again. What is this? The light began to fade back, and my vision came to. I looked outside my tank to see a creature staring back at me.

It was my owner! She saved me! But wait, where’s the pumpkin? It’s gone. She must’ve thrown it away because I got stuck to it. My surprise was ruined... Well... I guess I kinda surprised her anyway, but not the way I wanted to. Going big definitely didn’t work out for me, so I guess I’ll just stick to decorating my tank with fall leaves each year instead!
