Hello! I am planning on breeding my two fish and would like to know what you think. I'm not new to owning bettas by any means, I have raised them all of my childhood. Since I've gained a few years since then, I've been growing more interested in these fish, and have changed how I care for them to ensure a better life for them. Luckily, I never kept them in small containers, but I have begun to use heaters as to leaning they are tropical fish, adding live plants for beauty and better water quality, and I have an feeding my fish more a varied diet instead of only flakes. I was young and unknowing, but I have improved greatly since, and plan to take the next step in the hobby and keeping of betta fish-- breeding.
Of course, I don't have to breed fish, but I would love to. I am incredibly interested in genetics, and I adore these wonderful, little fish. Since I have the means to raise a spawn, I figured, why not try it?
I picked up two fish, about a week apart from each other. First, my multicolor longfin halfmoon double tail male. He has absolutely GORGEOUS fins, and I like his form. He is the male I have chosen.
Then, I chose my female. When I first chose her, she was white due to stress, but is now a light, honey-yellow color. She is a cute little dumbo, one opaque fin and one glass, and she has WONDERFUL form in my eyes.
Some people may be curious, "why those two fish?" Or may have concerns since the female is not exactly the same tail type. I do understand this. However, I do have goals and reasons for doing so.
GOALS--
~ Improve bettas throughout my time experiencing this
~ Breed double tail halfmoon dumbos (should be only HMDT dumbo spawn by 2nd or 3rd gen according to my punnet squares)
~ Work to improve spinal alignment and lessen common deformities associated with double tails
~ Raise healthy fry
~ Offer more DT dumbo bettas (they seem to be difficult to find, especially non-plakat)
~ Create a solid foundation to help others who may be interested in breeding HMDT Dumbos, and to allow people to enjoy them as beautiful pets and friends.
~While keeping a beautiful long tail, either making the fish stronger or lessening the tail a bit to reduce broken fin rays and tail biting once the betta ages.
~ Learn lots throughout this experience and have fun!
I have been planning this for a while. I have the spawning tank almost done cycling, and will be receiving vinegar eels and microworms any day now, as well as I have other food already with me. I've begun to set up temporary jars for the fry once they reach juvenile age to raise them in until the can find their new homes, as well preparing tanks for those I will keep. I am not jumping into this blindly, I have taken much time to research, but I do expect to make mistakes as a new breeder. However, I hope in the end I will find success and accomplishment throughout this.
If you have any comments, questions, concerns, or recommendations, please let me know. I am open to learn a much as I can from those more experienced!! Thank you for taking the time to read this and giving me your !

By all means you should breed them :)
Thank you!
I wouldn't try breeding doubletail and dumbo mixes just because both of those tail breeds are severely messed up. Dumbos often have trouble swimming, and doubletail's are basically mutatoonz. They often end up with spine problems :(.
Also - please follow me so I can add you to the Betta Olympics chatroom?
That is exactly the reason I plan to breed them. Personally, I don't fancy the excessive dumbo fins, the smaller ones that are still noticeable catch my eye, so I plan to try and keep them smaller, as well as my main goal is that I would like to improve double tails by helping to improve their situations. I will definitely consider what you said keep it in my mind. Thank you!
