Betta Tail Types

This week, we will be discussing the different tail types in betta fish. This can be a good way to help determine the tail type of your betta, because many times pet stores can make up names for them to make them sound more “appealing” or mix them up.

Veiltail

This tail is often seen with a long tail, flowing downwards in a swooping appearance that droop from the caudal peduncle. The dorsal and anal fins are also long and flowing. Veiltails have asymmetrical tails, basically meaning if you split them horizontally on half the top would not be the same as the bottom. Males have longer fins while females have shorter ones.

Crowntail

This species is relatively young, first bred in Indonesia around 25 years ago. The fins of this one have a long, spiky appearance. , if the webbing reaches farther than 2/3 of the tail, it is considered a combtail. The term “crowntail” is often abbreviated to CT when talking about the fish.

Combtail

Combtail bettas are very similar to crowntails, however they have many differences. The webbing in the tail goes farther than 2/3 of the way down the tail, which is normally less than 180 degrees, as anything more would be considered a half sun.

Plakat

Plakat bettas have my rounder and shorter tails than other betta fish. The name Plakat derives from the Thai word “plakad”, which means fighting fish. There are also halfmoon plakats, meaning their tail spreads 180 degrees and crowtail plakats, which have webbing and almost a spiky-look. Plakats are more closely related to the betta splendens in the wild compared to some of the other tail types.

Double Tail

The double tail betta has a double caudal fun. It’s important to know that a double tail is not just a single caudal split in half, rather it has two caudal peduncles. Most double tails also have shorter bodies and broader dorsal fins, which is another helpful way to distinguish these fish.

Halfmoon

The spread of a halfmoon has a full 180 degree tail, similar to a capital D. You must be very careful with these types of bettas because they are more susceptible to fin tearing and damage, also known as “blowing a tail.” There is also the over halfmoon, meaning the spread is over 180 degrees.

Half Sun

The half sun has a full 180 degree spread, but has rays extending beyond the caudal fin. This tail type was created by breeding crown tail and halfmoon betta fish together.

Rosetail and Feathertail

These bettas are similar to halfmoons, except the caudal fin extends over 180 degrees and the fins have excessive branching, often giving the betta fins a ruffled or zig-zag look.

Delta and Super Delta

With the delta and super delta, if you drew a horizontal line down the middle of the body, both the top and the bottom would have an equal amount of fins. There is also a super delta, which basically means that the super delta is approaching, but not exactly at 180 degrees, however the regular delta tail has a much more minuscule tail.

Round Tail

This fish is similar to both the delta and the plakat, but is distinctively different. The tail is fully rounded and the tail is much fuller and longer than the other two types.

Spade Tail

The spade tail betta is known by it’s most distinct characteristic, it’s spade-shaped tail!

Q: How do I prevent stress for my betta?

A: It really depends on what is making your betta stressed! Try to target certain problems until your betta is stress-free. Some reasons your betta may be stressed are too high filter flow, bad water quality, too big/small a tank, etc. Some symptoms of stress are stress stripes and fin nipping.
