The Dangers of Plastic Plants

Although the brightly colored plastic plants filling your local pet stores can be tempting for your pet betta fish, they often do more harm than good. Plastic plants often have sharp or rough edges that can tear fragile betta fins. A helpful way to see if your plants are safe is to run a pair of pantyhose over it. If the hose doesn’t sag, then the plant should be safe for bettas. Silk plants are a much better option as they are softer and have no risk of ripping the delicate fins of a betta fish. Better yet, live plants are hands down the best option for betta fish, as they help produce oxygen and aid with absorbing nitrates.

Q: Why do bettas make bubble nests?

A: Bettas make bubble nests to show they are ready to breed! When breeding, a male betta will carefully place the eggs into the bubble nest and guard it until they hatch. However, this does not mean they have to breed! Making bubble nests because they are happy and healthy is a myth. It is a natural behavior (like an instinct), not a reaction to emotions!

The Story of Kimchi

Kimchi swam up and down the glass restlessly, peering gloomily at the frowning, dark haired boy, doing his homework. The boy was clearly struggling at the work and was glaring at his paper as if acussing it of any wrong doing. The fish frowned. His little fins were too short for him to nip. Kimchi felt like he was going to die from boredom.

Boring, boring, same old boring.....

Kimchi swam around his tiny bowl angrily, flaring at the sharp, spiky, neon yellow plant the boy had plopped in the middle of the tank. What was the point of trying to swim around anyway? That thing in the middle took up all of poor, little Kim's space to swim. Even without that thing, Kim could barely swim any distance! Even the cup would have been better than that! It was far too bright for a land-creature to look at, let alone a meek, little, betta fish. Kim ed so well the day that he had come to this horrible place.

The little plakat's clear, plastic cup stood alone on the rack, apart from all the other fish’s cups. The betta flared angrily at his neighours. A pure white dumbo-halfmoon and a dark, red veiltail. They returned the angry faces and then all 3 went about their own business. Then all of a sudden, a tall, land-creature with long shiny fins flowing from it’s head and big lips swooped down and picked up the halfmoon with it’s delicate, large crowntail-like pectoral fins.

The creature held the betta's cup up towards the light before bringing the cup down and putting it inside a blue basket. On it, was a bright logo that the little plakat refused to look at. It turned and flared angrily at nothing.

Wonder what's going to happen to him....

Suddenly another land-creature swam rapidly towards them in a jerky, un-fish like movement. It excitedly pointed at the plakat and a larger creature with long fins sprouting from it’s head much like the last, opened it’s mouth with and moved it’s lips as if struggling to breathe. The smaller one grabbed Kimchi's little cup and plopped it into the basket where there was a spiky plant and a small fish bowl. Just a tad bit larger than Kimchi's cup.

Kimchi stared out of his scratched bowl which he'd resided in ever since those creatures brought him here. How much longer would he stay in this thing? How would he ever be free?

Today we are interviewing: Zane Austin

- How did you get into betta keeping? How long have you been keeping bettas?

My mom always had bettas when I was younger. Unfortunately, she kept them in bowls and rarely did water changes, if that. They lasted a long time though. When we moved, I decided I wanted my own tank and after failing with neons (was super bad, I was like eleven, not a good story) I got a ten gallon and bought two bettas. I set up a divided tank and that started things. I’ve been keeping bettas for five years.

- What bettas do you have now? Could we get some pictures of them?

I have a half moon black orchid king betta, I’ve a giant dragon HM plakat betta. A mustard gas delta/super delta. 4 females, three are plakat HM and one is a galaxy koi. The others are just koi’s, one is a red wine betta, I think she’s a slight combtail.

- If you have multiple tanks, which tank scape is your favorite? Can we see pictures of that tank?

I would say currently my favorite scape is Malachi’s in the ten gallon I have that’s divided, it’s like a mini rainforest.

- Do you keep any fish other than bettas?

I have neon tetras, khuli loaches and ember tetras. Idk if snails or shrimp count, but I have both.
