hello. I am new in this specific community. and I'm also a semi sleep deprived student with the social skills of a rock - maybe I would get along with Toph then.

also equipped with forgetfulness so I'm posting these now, so I don't just forget to post completely, since the finished result might (or might not) be a bit further away from now, since I work with watercolors which require drying time, and as previously mentioned am also a student therefore I don't always have time

the scene I'm using as a reference is from one of the Sozin's Comet episodes, where Aang meets ze lion turtle - so the following screencap

I'm using it largely as a reference but I'm vibing with my own style here so it is of course simultaneously different as well

sketching

first some sketching on different paper, then a more careful sketch on paper the final piece builds on

always a bit sad when the final sketch goes really well before a watercolour painting, because then I gotta erase it almost fully

9th of October - painting

the lighting isn't the best because I think it was like 8pm~1am time when I was doing these, so just. desk light only.

watercolor specs wise, I use two brands of watercolours right now : Derwent (Academy set maybe?), which is a fairly affordable set considering the quality (as well as quantity), but my absolute preference would be St. Petersburgs White Nights watercolors. Like they're amazing to work with

11th of October - painting

lucky me, I hit the 25 image limit right at today's progress. the lighting is way better since I was working in a different room and actually during the afternoon for once. shocking, I know.

I really ire and appreciate all the cool progress shots! Watercolor always fascinates me—(since I’m still trying to figure it out with my starbucks watercolors and random set of dollar store kiddie paint brush set and no watercolor paper pfpfpf) so I enjoy watching others put something as cool as this together. Love this screen shot too, a perfect choice :)

First of all, thank you!

I'm actually not very experienced with watercolors myself - I absolutely adored working with them, but the amount of pieces I've made with them so far amounts to, well, three completed ones, one other work in progress as well as this lion turtle piece

I've done some digital stuff before, and I've always loved drawing in general but I it that I had a v e r y long break until I slowly started getting more and more into it late last year or so

as for my supplies, well, on those it's a bit funny as well

the derwent academy set I mentioned in the post, it didn't actually cost that much but more importantly I bought mine from a bookstore in stead of an art supply store - so while it is way better than the dollar store options, it is also lower in quality to the St. Petersburgs (at least when looking at watercolors), it is also a very affordable option in comparison to them, when still getting used to things (considering it is a ~15€ set, which is $17 roughly I believe)

but there are several things the costier watercolors actually show why they're worth the price.

firstly, you're paying for quantity. In the professional and academy sets, the paint wells / blocks tend to be larger by volume, combined with the fact that the higher quality yields more pigment with less water and scrubbing

secondly, quality. things like how well colors blend, how well you can control the paint with a brush, and how standard the paint shade is when you repeat a certain process.

And that's it with the info rambling resembling a sales talk though unintended to be such, now following up with:

the tree pictures this comment has, the last one of them is physically the largest of my paintings, while also containing various details

it's almost completely done with a set which cost 5€ / $5~$6

as for the paper, personally I just try to find discounts, or buy bigger paper than what I actually most of the time paint on, and just cut it into smaller pieces🤫

the weight of the paper seems to be a really huge deal, but stretching it also helps a ton. I invested a bit on getting gummed paper tape and a natural sponge, and then I followed a bunch of videos from youtube

paint brushes! I have a ton of them, from cheap sets but also some detail brushes I've gotten as a present and whatnot, but individually bought brushes I have only two of, and can now vouch for them for all eternity or until proven otherwise - Raphaël's squirrel fur set, I think the set number is 835

they're a bit costy, but if taken care of accordingly (things like not letting water touch the metal part, drying the paint brush either horizontally or the brush facing down, etc etc) they will probably last a really long time

the thing about those brushes, I can't even put it into words properly

I actually got my two ones very recently, and the lion turtle piece is the first work I've used one in.

and get this.

the size 10 brush you might be able to see in one of the pictures, is the only brush I've used throughout the entire painting

all the details all the large areas, everything

I've yet to have a single problem with it, so I'm just screaming about them at every given opportunity (whoopsie)
