Internet safety is often overlooked in today’s society due to ignorance and an overall lack of proper prevention. Below I have included what Internet safety means, how to practice internet safety and a couple educational videos to help prevent unlawful and unpleasant occurrences.

What is internet safety?

In simple , internet safety is the act of staying safe online by practicing online safety techniques. Internet safety is important because if not cautious you may be at risk of illegal activity, abuse, fraud/scams, bullying, kidnapping, online stalking and other serious situations.

Be Wary of who you give your trust too

Your trust has tremendous value. It is fairly common for one to be easily deceived online. Lying is not against the law but depending on what one does with those lies can be. In reality social media is full of strangers. You may think you are talking to someone your own age or you may think you’re talking to someone you relate with, but how can you really know someone is being truthful with who they are? Time. Time and Patience is key into figuring out who you can and can’t trust but nonetheless your own safety should be your TOP priority.

Keep your personal information to yourself

Anything that might be deemed sensitive information such as: living situation, mental / physical health, family life, criminal background, addictions, and so on are your own personal business. Information can spread easily without one’s knowledge or consent. You may confide in someone over something traumatic or stressful but this leaves them the opportunity to spread your personal life and its struggles elsewhere. This may result in bullying, added stress and discriminatory remarks, all of which will not be tolerated. Here on the Avatar Amino we know everyone has their own individual hardships and we want to respect the confidentiality of our .

Information off other platforms

Be careful when sharing any information on other platforms outside of Amino (for example a lot of people on amino use discord as well and bring information and website links from there to here or vice versa). This community has over 47,000 people and we all are practically strangers. Information can spread like wild fire. If you don’t want the world to know it, don’t share it.

Let confidential information remain confidential

Scammers, stalkers and people with ill intentions want this kind of information to take advantage of you. Never give this information out to anyone.

Confidential information that should remain strictly confidential are:

s, addresses, your full legal name, phone number, social security number, credit card information and other financial information, legal documentations such as birth certificates and ports, personal photos of yourself and your family, answers to security questions on any site, your current location and location of friends and family.

Online Scams

Scammers are known for being ruthless and recently their target has moved from the elderly to the youth! Where do you find the youth? Apps like this one! They specifically target the youth because they are known to be more gullible and lack proper safety skills. However, the Avatar Amino is one step ahead of them with this PSA. Below is a video of the common scams to expect this year this video doesn’t just include online scams but others to look out for as well.

The News video provided is about how sophisticated these scams are. On amino the most common type of scams are catfishing and banking scams.

Don’t fall for fake online amino staff

Impersonating the amino staff team is no mystery on this social media app. If someone says they’re from Team Amino and they start asking you for personal information such as your or other personal details report the conversation to our moderation team!

Pedophiles and online grooming

These disgusting creatures are everywhere and can be hiding behind any profile picture. Lying about your age is not tolerated on this amino whether you are a minor pretending to be older or an adult wanting to play off as a 16 year old. Lying about ages to create a possible romantic connection is very common. Grooming can take place both in person and online. “Grooming is when someone builds a relationship, trust and emotional connection with a child or young person so they can manipulate, exploit and abuse them. Children and young people who are groomed can be sexually abused, exploited or trafficked. Anybody can be a groomer, no matter their age, gender or race.” If you know someone who is being groomed or you suspect someone of grooming you the proper authorities and the amino leadership team.

Below is a video I have provided about a pedophile who stalked a minor in a situation that went on for five years! The contents of the video is extremely disturbing so trigger warning to any potential watchers.

The idea or belief of “It won’t happen to me, what are the odds it would ever happen to me” is what leads to unfortunately disturbing situations like the ones above. Anyone is at risk of illegal activity and online harm. Stay safe online and practice safety techniques to guarantee a safe and fun online environment.
