These are the things I pay attention to when listening to someone's confession:
1. Let them talk first.
I let them talk out all of their worries and
thoughts without falling into their words.
I want them to know that the shrine is a
safespace where they are allowed to just
let go for a moment.
2. Analyzing their body language.
While listening to their confessions I also
pay attention to the way they sit, move their
arms or even where they look to. One often
underestimates the power of body language
as it tells a lot about how comfortable they
feel. Are they a more closed up and shy
person? Or are they very open by nature?
It always helps me with deciding on how
to approach them in the end of the day.
3. Asking moral questions.
Yes, it's mainly my job to listen to what they
have to tell but I also like to give them little
hints to a better future without wanting to
tell them what to do. The right type of
questions do often help people to reflect
themselves and help them with what they
want to change in their life.
4. Stay on personal distance.
At first this might sound negative but it actually
isn't. Dropping personal information can lead to
the confessor misinterpret things or get easily
manipulated. So I always make sure to keep
things neutral with a clear focus on the
confessor.
5. Keeping things anonymous.
Everything that they confess to me will stay
absolutely safe with me. My lips will be sealed
for eternity because they came to the shrine
for a personal reason that is of no one else's
business.
