Rio Nakamura had been the only Spider-women in her universe. Her secret identity developed after being bitten by a radioactive spider that altered her DNA and caused her to have supernatural powers that no ordinary human has. She knew what she had to do once her powers-
“Woah, hold on, you are telling the story like this?”
What’s wrong with how I’m telling the story?
“I mean, nothing is wrong with how you're telling the story. I just think I can do a better job.”
Okay then, how would write your story?
“Rio Nakamura was a highly praised and confident student of class 3-E at Kunugigaoka College. She had blossomed under the guidance of her teacher, Ryushi Korogane. However, Mr. Korogane and Rio both had their secrets. The truth was that Rio was the only spider-women in her universe and her teacher helped her on learning her new profound abilities. Her abilities had developed after she had been bitten by a radioactive spider which she couldn’t ignore. As much as she tried, she knew she had to take up the mantle of being the Spider-women. Whether she was ready for it or not.”
I’ll it, that wasn’t half bad.
“Told you! Now, you may continue with your narration. I’m excited for what’s to come.”
As previously stated, Rio had slowly taught herself how to be the Spider-woman with her teacher’s help. Mr. Korogane knew little to nothing about how to be a superhero but he was going to try and help her as best as he could. He had designed a workout regiment for her to do every week, to train her muscles and increase her strength. Not only that but he designed a set of training exercises for her when she was out being Spider-women she could attempt to perform safely to understand her powers better. The word Rio ignored the most in that sentence was to safely perform the training exercises.
She slowly modified her routine when it came to living a double life. Balancing her normal life with her secret identity, that only wasn’t a secret to two people. After she'd adjusted to being Spider-women, she was able to do nightly patrols after she had finished her college classes. Which is where she is right now, observing people and watching over the places in her city.
“What are you thinking about Spider-women?”
“Nothing much. I’m a little worried about tomorrow.”
“What’s going on?”
“I have work tomorrow, meaning I won’t be able to do any nightly patrols for days.”
“Hey, what I told you when you were first learning how to balance your life out? I said that-“
“That sacrifices need to be made for a good balance to be created. I know.”
“It’s something you have to make sure you Rio. I know you have more responsibilities than any normal person but prioritizing these responsibilities is what’ll make or break you.”
“I know. I know. I’m worried what’ll happen without me being there.”
“Hey, the city isn’t completely alone when you’re gone. I’m keeping my eyes out on any suspicious activity and calling the police when needed! I have your back.”
Rio quietly chuckled. Mr. Korogane always knew what to say to make her feel. Suddenly, there was a small notification that came from her phone. She stood up from where she was seated, which was on top of a large apartment complex. She stretched her arms and readied her legs to jump. She jumped off of the apartment complex and reached her arm out to shoot a web at another building. As she continued to fall, the web caught her and swung her body to where she had stretched her arm out. She continued to web-sling her way to her next destination.
“Did you get the notification, Rio?”
“Yes, I’m on my way there now. It looked like a potential robbery?”
“Mhm. I don’t think this is an average robbery.”
“Why do you say that?”
“They are being cautious but smart with what they are doing. This wasn’t a spur-of-a-moment decision.”
“Do you think it’s premeditated?”
“Possibly. Be very careful Rio.”
“I always am.”
A scoff can be heard on Mr. Korogane’s end as he ends the transmission. She adjusted her earpiece mid-flight as she reached her destination. She landed on top of another building and watched cautiously. She was watching the criminal's movements before she made her move. A group of people had walked up to the building. Out of the entire group of people, she took notice of four individuals. She had noticed them since they all had left out of the same vehicle. It was the only vehicle parked outside of the building, which if it was a taxi, it would have left by now. However, it was likely waiting for the perpetrators to come back. After the people had gone inside, she started to observe her surroundings and the area outside. She gathered that the large building had to have security inside and wouldn’t be easy to get inside unnoticed. ‘The possibility that the criminals work here or know someone who has access to this building is pretty high.’ Rio thought to herself as she lifted onto her feet and swung behind the building. She entered through an open window and quietly found a place to rest for a moment. She had opened her phone and asked the K.O.R.O to help her track the criminals she had seen entering the building.
K.O.R.O was a system designed by Mr. Korogane to help her with anything she may need on a mission. It was one of the reasons she had to wear an earpiece under her mask, so she could keep in with Mr. Korogane if she needed anything. K.O.R.O. would send a transmission to Mr. Korogane with a message, and he would answer it from there. K.O.R.O’s system can also scan an entire building and locate criminals through the live footage that comes from a recording system embedded in the spider-suit. It was one of the many reasons K.O.R.O was so valuable to Rio on her missions, especially now.
“Hey, K.O.R.O! I need you to locate the set of criminals I had my eyes on earlier.”
“Understood. They are on the tenth floor of this building. They appear to be planting a device I do not recognize and holding hostages. Would you like for me to show you where they are?”
“Yes, please show me. I need to hurry.”
“Understood.”
K.O.R.O took a minute to process the request. Rio waited impatiently for K.O.R.O to respond. She felt anxious as she realized she was now dealing with a hostage situation and robbery. As Rio checked her surroundings, the eyeholes of her mask blinked. She jumped as she saw virtual arrows indicating which route she should go. She looked around as she spotted the criminals. They were now visible through the walls of the building and highlighted due to K.O.R.O's program.
As soon as she had her sights on them, she leaped to action. She made her way over to the criminals cautiously. She made sure to stay clear of any security guards and to keep her guard up.
She entered the room by delicately removing one of the ceiling tiles and slipping her way inside. She silently crawled on the ceiling and watched the dangerous situation play out. She would have to be very critical about her next move. She gently felt her phone in her pocket and tapped the screen twice. K.O.R.O. gave her options on what to do. The whole scene was two people trying to plant a bomb against something in this building to achieve their goal, while the other two held two maintenance workers as hostages. All while being undetected. Now, she thought about what she should do. She would need to disarm the criminals first and save the hostages. She would then have to stop the people trying to set off the bomb. Finally, she would have to make sure they didn’t escape and call the police. Police and bomb squad. As she took a deep breath in she thought, ‘It’s now or never.’
“Hey boys! Up here!!”
The two criminals holding weapons looked up at the dark ceiling, trying to make out any figure of a person. However, they were too slow. The two criminals were grabbed by a web and brought up to the ceiling. Each was abruptly slammed into the ceiling tile as they were completely webbed onto it. Now stuck to the ceiling. As the other two who had been planting the bomb looked around in a daze, one of them was suddenly grabbed and thrown into the other one. Both were indirectly slammed into a nearby wall because of the collision. Spider-women jumps down from the ceiling and webs the other two to the nearby wall, both are unable to move. ‘One, two, three, and four. That should be everyone.’ Rio turns her attention to the nearby maintenance workers who appear to be shaken up but unharmed in this nightmare. She clears her throat and decides to make sure they are alright.
”Are you both hurt?”
Both of the workers shake their heads repetitively. ‘This could have ended badly, I’m lucky.’ She could feel the leftover anxiousness leave goosebumps on her skin as she nodded back at the workers. She turned her attention to the bomb, K.O.R.O’s analysis had virtually stated ‘not active.’ The bomb was not active and likely was not finished being activated when Spider-women had come. ‘What a relief.’
An unexpected commotion caused Spider-women to turn her attention outside. It sounded like sirens. Spider-women looked through the polished glass as she saw vehicles pull forward. The police arrived on the scene. Which means, it was her time to leave. She turned towards the maintenance workers.
“Alert the police there could be more suspects inside the building and of a bomb threat, would you for me? Thank you!”
She made a heart with one hand as the other shot a web to the ceiling, lifting her body with it as she disappeared. She hastily made her way out of the building and back outside. She watched as police stormed inside and as they arrested the one person who was waiting in the vehicle. Her phone began to vibrate in her pocket as she allowed the transmission to go through.
“Hey, K.O.R.O. notified me you had finished your mission and the police arrived at the scene. How did it go?”
“It was something. It was my first time dealing with a hostage situation. It went pretty well for my first time.”
“Hostage situation? Wait, what h-“
“I found out it was less a robbery and more planting a bomb. Must’ve planted a bomb to steal something though, which would make it a robbery. The hostage part was a bonus in all of this.”
“Oh my God. Are you alright at least? Are you hurt!? Did anyone else get hurt?!”
Mr. Korogane’s voice was more panicked and worried now.
“I’m- I’m a bit shaken up. It was pretty intense but no one was hurt. I had managed to stop all of it in time thankfully. ”
Rio perched herself on a nearby building as she squatted down. She felt the goosebumps spreading as her mouth ran dry. She could hear Mr. Korogane sigh, filled with relief knowing she wasn’t injured or anyone else was hurt. She stared down the busy city streets as nighttime was upon them.
“Hey, do you want to know what to know something?”
“What is it?”
“It’s not easy being Spider-women. Not everyone can do what you do and save people but that doesn’t make the job any easier.”
Rio let his words sink into her skin. When her abilities first developed she wanted to desperately hide them. However, that wasn’t going to work. She had to embrace them and slowly learn to use them for good but that in itself brought challenges. She would have to take up responsibilities she might not be ready for. It brought her great joy to do what she could to help but it easily brought a lot of stress too. She lifted her head, letting herself feel the wind brush against her skin. She took in a deep breath and sighed.
“I know, It’s something I have to learn. Comes with the job, right?”
Mr. Korogane laughed a little and agreed with Rio. The mood felt a bit more lighthearted now.
“After tonight, I would argue that you should go home early tonight.”
“Don’t have to tell me twice.”
“Be safe. If you need me don’t hesitate to call my cell phone or ask K.O.R.O to call me.”
“I will, goodnight Mr. Korogane.”
“Goodnight Rio.”
The transmission ended as Rio sighed again. She gently let herself fall forward and web-slinged herself home. Where she would rest the entire night and prepare for tomorrow.
