Writer’s Academy Lesson 1: The Basics

Do you want to learn some tips for writing a blog?

Hey guys I know I haven’t posted in a long time, sadly my I Pad is going through another malfunction and I could only go on it a few times in a day. I promise I’ll start posting frequently again, even if it might be just edits. Please bear with me until my I Pad gets better. Also I want to tell you some exciting news. Blanc, my dear friend, has become a curator! It is also her birthday so happy birthday Blanc! Now let’s get to our first session of Writer’s Academy!

Here you will find some tips and tricks that you could use to improve your writing skills. Beginning bloggers, intermediate bloggers, and advanced bloggers can find tips here. I’ll also have some bloggers “guest star” in this “show.” I will also link some examples of blogs that have the tips of tricks I am talking about so readers can get the idea of what I am talking about. (I’ll only use it with their permission.) Also if you want me to talk about a certain topic, then I will make a Wiki Entry so you can suggest a topic you want me to help you on. Now let’s get started and hopefully this series will help you!

Lesson 1

The basics

For this lesson I will emphasize on the basics of writing a blog. I’ll describe on what topics, words, grammar, and sentences to use to capture your reader. I’ll also add some ways that may help you improve on all of this. Now let’s start.

Title/Topic

For a topic, always try to use a interesting topic that maybe no one has ever thought of. Explore different areas or maybe ask a friend for help. Be creative when choosing a topic. Find some sort of “trend” that’s going on and connect this “trend” to your blog. This will make more readers interested because something that they love is connected in your blog. Also make sure your topic is quite different or put a different word in your title that has the same meaning to the simple words you were gonna use. You can find many synonyms to each word. Search it up on the internet or ask a friend. You could also use the same word, but translate it into a foreign language and use that word. Another thing to do is, make your title a quote. Let’s say if your post is about friendship then a quote could be “Together we can overcome anything!” or something like that. If you are doing a review or maybe a character analysis, then making your title and topic different is a little challenging. Find an anime that no one has saw before, or chose a theme that no one has thought of before like how my friends Blanc and Link did. As for the title, the foreign language, synonym thing, and quote thing are bound to work. Try all of this and your title/topic is all set.

Words to use

I know this may not seem like a big deal, but using bigger words are better than using smaller words, let me explain. So say your writing a story, using the words like “She said” are small words but if you say “She exclaimed” this shows the emotions that person is feeling, and is a better way to show your readers what you want them to feel. This method doesn’t always have to be in stories, it can be in your blogs to. Try to find a synonym or a better word to use then the one you were thinking of using. People will feel the emotion you want them to feel and you seem more professional.

Grammar

Proper grammar makes your posts easy to understand. I know it’s hard to make every single thing right that you sometimes forget about something and then realize it once you posted, for me that thing is usually grammar or spelling. Even though both of those things may not seem as important, they are. But today I will only talk about grammar and I am gonna leave spelling for another time. One way to check your grammar is to have a proofreader. A proofreader reads you writing beforehand and then tells you what mistakes you made and how to fix them. I am thinking of asking the MOD Team if we can have official proofreaders but I will ask that later.

Hooks

The begging of your blog and your title are what grab readers attention. Since I covered the title, I will emphasize on the begging sentence. I’m a blog, Link said that you shouldn’t start your blog with a plain “Hi” or “Hey guys” but like a unique intro. You could ask a question or put a quote like how Incognito does. Or maybe you could make your own creative intro, make it extra creative to catch people’s attentions.
