Today I’m going to be talking about my favorite character from the amazing series, Steins;Gate. I have yet to watch Steins;Gate 0, but since it aired during Spring 2018, I’m just going to be talking about Kurisu in general. Ever since her first appearance in the series, I’ve ired everything about her including the way she acts and how she handles things. She is definitely an independent female character that can teach many lessons to the watcher. It also wouldn’t be a stretch saying that Kurisu is one of my favorite anime characters of all time, as I can’t think of many other characters that have been able to reach out to me as much as she has.

Makise Kurisu is a gifted student who graduated from university at the age of seventeen, and has become well known in the community of science. At eighteen, after meeting Rintaro Okabe, she is then added as Lab Member 004 of the Future Gadget Lab. She wears a tucked in dress shirt with a loose red tie and black shorts on top of black tights. She also wears partially unzipped black boots that adds to her overall acerbic personality with the rest of her outfit altogether. She is one of the central characters in the story of Steins;Gate and is very important in helping Okabe and the other characters with their troubles in the show. She and her father also have a pretty complicated relationship, as they are both scientists, although Kurisu is far more successful than him, which he isn’t too pleased about. This relationship they have ultimately affects her personality.

For the most part, Kurisu expresses a very mature personality throughout the series of Steins;Gate. Her calm, cool and collected vibe really clashes with the personality of Okabe, who is always unleashing his eccentric attitude in the show. I think it’s very interesting to have both of them interacting so much given their personalities, because it makes for great character foil. One could say that Kurisu also falls under the Tsundere category, as proposed by Okabe himself. She is also always confidant with what she has knowledge of, and uses facts and common knowledge to always why she’s right or why something is wrong. That being said, it takes a while in the series for her to believe that time travel actually exists, considering that there is little to no evidence in the world, and only is convinced once she sees concrete proof. It is also seen that her general attitude is the result of her attempting to use it as a sort of defense mechanism that hides her vulnerabilities.

Her Importance in Steins;Gate

I feel that Kurisu is an extremely vital character that makes Steins;Gate what it is. Now, it’s easy to say that for anyone, considering she is a main character, but there’s more to it than that. If a different character were to take her place with different dynamics, I really don’t think Steins;Gate would be as successful as it is. The foil between Okabe and Kurisu is important for character development and also entertainment, because their interactions can be quite hilarious at certain points. It’s hard for me to see any other type of character but Kurisu to be able to carry these scenes and make them flow well. Her relationship with Okabe throughout the first season of the show changes his thoughts and makes him come to his senses a little bit, in other words, I think that Kurisu really brings out Okabe’s serious side, which I like a lot. The sweet moments they have together give the show an even deeper vibe that I appreciate very much, especially considering that it takes long for Kurisu to properly express her emotions.

As I said before, Kurisu is definitely my favorite character in the series of Steins;Gate. I think she’s an amazing example of a strong female character that can handle things on her own at all times. She also seems like she would be a cool friend to have in real life, as long as you’re not as eccentric and quirky as Okabe, then she may not like you at first. In a way, the main reason I even decided to continue watching Steins;Gate is because of Kurisu. If you’ve seen the show, you’ll know that the beginning is extremely slow and things don’t get good for a few episodes. I could’ve easily dropped it and dismissed it as a boring show, but because of Kurisu I stayed because I just wanted to see what else she had to give in the show. I’m very glad I did, because Steins;Gate is now one of my favorite shows, and I strongly encourage anyone who hasn’t seen it to go and start it because of how cool the concept of the show is. I’d say it’s probably one of the best time traveling stories of all time. But anyways, she definitely makes the series much more enjoyable for me, and I bet many other could say the same.
