:star: Dramatic lighting tutorial :star: PART 1*

BEFORE WE GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD, I'D LIKE TO MAKE A FEW REQUESTS UPON ANYONE CONSIDERING TO USE THIS TUTORIAL...

THIS TUTORIAL ISN'T REALLY FRIENDLY TO CHARACTERS WITH VERY BRIGHT OR PASTEL COLOR SCHEMES !!!! SORRY!!

1. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE DONT GIVE ME THE "this tutorial doesn't work" ART TUTORIALS AREN'T SOME CODE I CAN PLANT INTO YOUR MIND SO YOU CAN PERFECTLY REPLICATE IT. It's a very agitating and offensive reply too :cold_sweat: ...

LETS GET STARTED...

STEP ONE:

Finish up your lineart and turn your background into a dark color (darkness depends on how dramatic you want it to be.)

•Don't add your base colors yet! (Optional)

STEP 2:

ADD LAYER- MODE SET: NONE

Add your lighting! If you don't know how to add lighting, that's quite unfortunate, but you don't need to know how to do it properly to test the tutorial!

• Dont use an extremely saturated color and don't use a very light color or the highlights will end up botched...Trust the process !

* Try a medium red orange or yellow (personal favorites, but I did purple for this one.)

STEP 3:

ADD LAYER- MODE SET: MULTIPLY

Add your cast shadows with a darker more saturated hue of your base color.

*EX: ORANGE --> RED, VIOLET, OR PINK

*EX: GREEN --> BLUE, VIOLET, RED(Go for it sister !)

*I DID DARK BLUE FOR MINE

STEP 4:

Add a layer- you can leave this one anywhere.

HIGHLIGHTS? ANY HIGHLIGHTS? APPLY YOUR HIGHLIGHTS BEFORE YOU FORGET LATER ON (less is more)

*I only add a highlight for the eye because yes (hair doesn't need a highlight).

STEP 5:

GO BACK TO LIGHTING LAYER.

Clean up your lighting from step 2 with the eraser tool.

*Any lighting that goes out of the lines or overlaps where it shouldn't.

*I've only made minor changes so it may be difficult to tell

STEP 6:

ADD LAYER ABOVE ALL LAYERS (lineart included)- MODE SET: COLOR DODGE

Select the airbrush tool and lightly apply dark red, orange, or yellow light on the light areas from step 2.

*Only add a heavy amount to areas closer to the light source

*I applied more of the airbrush to the top of the hair because my light source is coming from there. I add a more gentle amount as I go down the canvas.

STEP 7:

Oh? I hear that you REALLY like bright colors...I have the thing for you. Add a layer above your COLOR DODGE layer and set it to ADD. Keep the airbrush and change the color to a brighter red, orange, or yellow and lightly apply it on areas where your light source hits strongest.

*LESS. IS. MORE.

STEP 8:

Add a layer above your COLOR DODGE and ADD and set it to SCREEN. Keep the airbrush and change your color to blue or indigo. The blue can be as saturated as you want, hell- I encourage you to pick a saturated shade of blue! Lightly add blue to the opposing corners where your light source is coming from. If it's too bright, lower the opacity.

AAARRRRGGGHHHH I BUTCHERED THE COLORS SO THE BASE COLORS LOOK WEAK SORRY LMAO

When you do add your base colors, do it under all of your layers :^) !

Thank you for making it to the end of the tutorial! Add whatever finishing touches you usually do (I make a prism effect !) The drawing application used was IbisPaintX. Other applications will work as well.
