Hello everybody! Welcome to this week's art forum! (sorry for being late again T-T) How are you guys doing today? I started playing stardew Valley again and I'm having a lot of fun relaxing and playing a game I enjoy! But enough about that on to the winner of last week's art forum!

Jesse Hasch!

This is what they had to say!:

"The purpose of art is to provide a percievable glimpse of the human mind. One of the most difficult things in the universe to make sense of, yet merely a glimpse inside can speak so much about what they think, what they feel what they want. What torments someone. What someone wishes they had. They depict it through imagery. Words are sometimes not enough to understand someone. It is means of simply just being understood. Seeing, is believing."

Now onto our question of the week!!:

Do you believe animation is for kids? Is it often portrayed as a show genre rather than an art form?

I like this question and I'm gonna flat out say... NO animation is not just for kids!! Have you seen the anime community?? The anime genere is full of violent animes, errottic animes, tons of fan service and more! These are things a child probably shouldn't see! Some animation is geared towards teens or adults. Not children! I think as a society we say that animation is for kids when really like live action shows or movies it's a broad range of age groups. Back in the day (with black and white cartoon in the early 1900's) cartoons were only geared towards children and was not supposed to be taken seriously. Because of that it's still a thing people say "oh you watch anime?? Isn't that for kids??" NOOO NOOO ITS NOOOTTTTT!!!

The second part of the question yes I think people see it more as a show genre rather than art. If your not an animator or artist you just see it as a genre. If your an artist or animator you see it more as an art form (mostly to animators). When I was a little bit younger I dabbled in animation and boy oh boy IT'S NOT EASY!! People who can do animation I applause you for that. You need tons of patience, learn the fundamentals AND MEMORIZE THEM!! it's not easy T-T

Another factor to this is that people don't realize how long it takes for a single episode to come out. It can take years for an entire season! The whole realizing one episode of anime a week tends to make people think that an episode of anime is created in one week when really that's further from the truth. Even if you have a giant team it's still gonna take a while!! When people get inpatient when a season is taking a long time to be released and it hasn't been a year yet kinda grinds my gears since they don't understand. I try to tell them why but they just don't understand the concept.

That was probably rambly and I'm sorry for that. It's just a topic I am really familiar with and when I'm familiar with something I just go off on if. But anyways what do YOU guys think? :DDDD

i think animation would be an art form and not a genre because genres are like horror or comedy or romcoms. animations can be any of those, they are just drawn not live action :3 lots of animes are definitely not for kids!

Haha I've seen so many stuff that I can definitely say it's not for kids. I mean there ARE for some, but most of it is surely catered more to teens and adults.

Also, it's more like a show or entertainment.

Animations are like picture books that eventually evolve into chapter books as you become more mature and understanding of sensitive topics. Animation itself doesn't make up a genre for entertainment- there are so many different types out there which are targeted out to children, adults, teenagers, and people of all (or the recommended) of a specific content that you like! It's up to you decide what types of animation you consume and the possible consequences you may receive for watching content above the age recommendation *COUGH* *COUGH*- HAZBIN HOTEL ENJOYERS...Dragon Maid...the mlp .mov vids.

No, animation is not for kids. It’s not for anybody specifically, it’s purpose is for story telling. It is true that the form has been mainly used for child entertainment, but to say that it’s only role is for such a thing is untrue, even ludicrous! For over a century, it has been a media used for telling stories to an audience of any kind. Projects such as “Avatar:The Last Airbender”, “Gravity Falls” “Corpse Bride” and many more, can be rated E for everyone (haha). True, the initial intent was for children to watch, but they can be enjoyed by all ages due to their story and use of animation. Its something children can watch and enjoy, seeing the pretty art style and moving pictures. But also by adults who can appreciate the work that was put into it, as well as the story telling and plot.

Now for the second question, is it an art form or a show genere? I am definitely leaning more towards it being an art form. Animation isn’t something to sneeze at, it takes time, patience, skills, endurance, a strong mind, will power, etc. It has become a more easier media for studios to use compared to when its was first invented, but it still takes an incredible amount of effort to produce a full series/ movie in animation. Sadly, most people tend to see it as just another way to produce a story and the medium is often under appreciated by many.

Yess this has been an ultimate debating question for generations now!!

I agree animation is definitely not for kids! But the fact that drives it mostly is funny moments which tend to drive a wider younger audience like you see in the classic Tom and Jerry, Tom bump his head against the wall to derive laughter from the audience. We basically term these as cartoons but sometimes children imitate these stunts and end up injured. There are also some censorship done in regards to other forms of animation as well. Now onto anime. No! It definitely isn't for kids! Anime is something which relates to human life more and is not just a form of entertainment. Not just because of the genres of erotism or gruesome bloody fight scenes, it also depicts the depressive and heart wrenching episodes of what one has to go through various phases of life. Anime is complicated. The minds of kids cannot comprehend such complex emotions. Therefore in conclusion for the safe record I would like to believe that no animation is completely safe for kids and must be supervised under parental guidance always.

Also I agree with you Owlie on the efforts of animators. It takes a lot of hardwork and dedication to finish an episode, let alone an entire season. Kudos to them! :triumph: 🤌 :sparkles:
