After failing to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protect Act (COPPA), Youtube was made to pay a 170 million dollar fine; the largest COPPA fine in history. Due to these privacy violations, the company announced new rules and regulations regarding children's entertainment on their platform on September 4th, 2019.

What does this mean?

In the coming months, creators will be required to say if the content they create is made for kids. This will in turn, limit several features on the platform that was originally accessible by everyone. This includes no longer having personalized ads, no matter if an adult is watching the video or not. Personalized ads and monetization allow for many toy and family YouTubers to make it a full time job. Removing this feature will effectively leave many creators without a job.

Other changes that will be implemented will lead to decreased creator/community interaction. Comments will not be allowed on videos along with likes/dislikes, the community tab, and live streaming.

Creators should not be punished for Youtube's inability to comply with COPPA. If these changes go into affect, many online toy, craft, and gaming communities that thrived on Youtube including My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, Disney, DIY, Slime, L.O.L. Surprise, American Girl, Barbie, Minecraft, and Roblox will no longer be able to exist.

American Girl doll videos are considered "Children's content" and the creator of an American Girl video will be fined $42,000 if they decide it's 13+ content. With these new laws that are coming, American Girl YouTube creators will be forced to make their videos for kids, and will loose about 80% of their profit. This means that anyone who makes these videos for their job will either have to change their content or leave their YouTube career for something else. Here is a video from MixiePixie7 explaining what is going on with her channel.

So are they all leaving or they’re just not getting paid and getting their comments turned off?

They still shouldn’t leave. Even without ads and comments people can still watch and enjoy the videos

And a lot of Children Youtubers like Ryan's toy reviews or Chloe's American Girl Doll Channel have already made a lot of money because of how popular they were. And although this isn't true for all Child YouTube's, a lot of them are most likely financially stable based on the past views and money they had made. For example a lot of Youtubers also have merch they also profit off of. And also considering the stats of marriage in America, 61.1% of marriages have both partners working. So taking into consideration of past money earned, extra profits, and money earned by the partner if there is one, the Youtubers should have stability to easily transition from a job on Youtube to a in life occupation. Not saying youtube isn't a job, but I'm saying if the rules go into effect, many of the Youtube families should survive just fine until a new career is found.
